What Exactly Is Pickleball?

Pickleball is played on a 20×44 foot court, about a third of the size of a tennis court, with a net slightly lower than a tennis net. Players use solid paddles and a perforated plastic ball to volley back and forth, aiming to score points through smart placement and quick reflexes. It can be played as singles or doubles, and while the game is quick to pick up, its depth makes it addictive for all skill levels.

A Game for All Generations

Pickleball is unique in its ability to bring together people of all ages and backgrounds. With slower ball speeds, smaller courts, and rules that promote strategy over strength, it’s easier on the joints and far more approachable than other racquet sports.

According to data from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, more than 36.5 million people played pickleball in 2023. While the sport initially gained popularity with older adults, that’s quickly changing—nearly one-third of all players are now between 18 and 34 years old. But players over 55 still make up a significant portion of the pickleball community, showing just how inclusive the game really is.

No matter your age, you’re never too early—or too late—to join the pickleball fun.

Start Strong with the Right Pickleball Gear: What Do You Need to Get Started?

You don’t need much to get started—but having the right gear can make all the difference:

  • Paddle: Choose from wood (budget-friendly), composite (balanced), or graphite (lightweight and powerful). Pickleball paddles are smaller than tennis racquets but larger than ping-pong paddles.
  • Pickleballs: These lightweight plastic balls have holes and come in different versions for indoor and outdoor play. Indoor balls have fewer holes (typically 26), while outdoor balls have more (usually 40) and are more durable.
  • Court Shoes: Look for tennis or court shoes with a good grip and lateral support. Avoid running shoes, which can increase the risk of ankle injuries.
  • Clothing: Comfortable athletic wear that allows freedom of movement.
  • Optional: A water bottle, towel, paddle grip tape, and a small bag to keep everything organized.

Most clubs, including PickleRage, offer free or low-cost equipment rentals, so you can try out the sport before investing in your own gear.

Master the Basics of Pickleball: Key Rules & Common Terms

Here’s a quick breakdown of the key rules every beginner should know:

  • Scoring: Games are typically played to 11 points, with a win by 2. Points can only be scored by the serving team.
  • Serve: The serve is made underhand and diagonally across the court, landing beyond the kitchen (non-volley zone).
  • Double Bounce Rule: The ball must bounce once on each side before players can hit it in the air.
  • The Kitchen: A 7-foot non-volley zone near the net. Players can only step into it after the ball bounces.
  • Faults: A fault ends the rally. Common faults include hitting out of bounds, volleying in the kitchen, or not letting the ball bounce when required.

Mastering these basics will have you playing confidently in no time.
